Learning Zone & Adobe Flash on Chrome Browser

Chrome Browser recently made a change and turned off the Flash Player and this made our Britannica Learning Zone have problems. It does not affect all users but the steps below can be used to correct this issue. Once you go through these steps it will be saved for future visits.

Turn on Adobe Flash Player in Chrome browser.
1. On your computer, open Chrome.
2. At the top right, click More (you may see 3 dots on your screen instead of “More”, then click on Settings.
3. At the bottom, click Show advanced settings.
4. Under “Privacy,” click Content settings.
5. Under “Flash,” choose “Allow sites to run Flash.”
6. At the bottom, click Done.

Britannica Scavenger Hunt

Hey School Librarians! Teachers!  Join the 5th Annual  Britannica Scavenger Hunt to win prizes!

Did you know? The Oklahoma Department of Libraries has paid for every school in the state to get free access to Britannica School, an online student encyclopedia from one of the most trusted names in reference: Encyclopedia Britannica. To introduce students in grades K-8 to this comprehensive resource, we’re hosting an information scavenger hunt with lots of prizes!

Prizes Grades K-5: The grand prize winning student will receive a $50 Walmart gift card and a selection of free books. Nine lucky students will each receive a $15 Walmart gift card. And the grand prize winner’s school library will receive a one-year free subscription to Britannica ImageQuest!

Prizes Grades 6-8: The grand prize winner will receive a $50 Walmart gift card and some free books! Nine middle school students will each receive a $15 Walmart gift card. The grand prize winner’s school library will receive access to Britannica ImageQuest, free of charge for one year!

How to Join
Step One: Get Britannica School. Make sure your school library has online access to Britannica School. Don’t have access? Go to or call Arlene Paschel at 405-522-3505 or email at

Step Two: Register by February 14 for The Great Britannica Information Scavenger Hunt. You’ll get online access to the Scavenger Hunt on February 15, plus digital delivery of The Oklahoman!

Step Three: Go on the Hunt! Show your students how to access Britannica School to answer the questions in our scavenger hunt. Collect their answers. By Friday, March 10, send the number of students who participated, and the names of all participants who aced the hunt to: We’ll hold a drawing for the prizes!

Shortcuts to EBSCO & Britannica

Help your patrons discover EBSCO & Britannica by creating a desktop shortcut. First minimize all windows.  Then right click in center of the screen. Click New>Shortcut.  In the text box, enter the URL of your choice: For EBSCO, enter: and for Britannica,  Click Next. In the text box, enter the shortcut name: EBSCO or Britannica School.  Click Finish, then test, and you’re done.

If you want to point to Explora or Consumer Health or any of the specific databases, call ODL at 405-522-3505 and get help with the URL.  Remember EBSCO has Consumer Reports, their Buying Guide, and so much more – so point your patrons to Digital Prairie resources.

Britannica School – give me my numbers!

Need to obtain your usage statistics? Do you know your Britannica account logins?  The regular database logins will work! First access  Follow the instructions on the screen to generate your report.  Leave “All Accounts” in the first box and put in the Username/Password for your account only. These are case sensitive. Sessions = logins;  Queries = search terms; Documents = articles accessed and Media = All multimedia, including video clips, extended play videos, audio files, photos, illustrations, maps, interactive timelines, multimedia lessons, etc.

There are two tabs on the main page you can use for additional information labeled Report Help and Report Definitions if needed or contact us at 405-522-3505 with your questions.

Stop in at 2016 OLA Conference booth

ODL will be at the 2016 OLA conference in Tulsa this week – so stop by the booth and grab some bookmarks. The bookmarks feature Britannica School, EBSCOhost,  and EBSCO’s Explora. There is a blank username and password field, providing an easy way to share that vital information with your patrons. New Digital Prairie Bookmarks and Events!

New Britannica School BookmarkThe Oklahoma Department of Libraries just unveiled a new series of Digital Prairie bookmarks.  The new bookmarks feature Britannica School, EBSCOhost, and EBSCO’s Explora and are tailored to students and public library customers. They also include a blank username and password field, providing an easy way to share that information with your students and customers. The bookmarks can be downloaded and printed for free from the Printables page.

The Digital Prairie trainer will be at OTA Encyclomedia in Oklahoma City on October 6th – 7th to distribute the new bookmarks, show off the new EBSCO Explora interface, and answer your Digital Prairie questions.  Feel free to contact us with your Digital Prairie questions and/or training needs.

All libraries and schools in Oklahoma have FREE access to Britannica School for the elementary and middle school levels through Digital Prairie. Digital Prairie is a production of the Oklahoma Department of Libraries, and is funded with state and federal funds. Federal funds are provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.
